Lafayette Returns to Goldfish Pond
August 30 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT
The Goldfish Pond Association (GPA) is proud to host this national event celebrating General Lafayette’s visit to the United States in 1824.
Join us as we celebrate with the Marquis and other distinguished guests at the pond. There will be a short program and speech by Lafayette.
History
The Marquis De Lafayette was a French aristocrat who fought alongside General George Washington in the American Revolution and instrumental in the battle of Yorktown in 1781. In 1824, the Marquis was invited back to the United States in order to honor his contribution to the war.
In a “Grand Tour”, he passed by the Ingall’s Farm, now Goldfish Pond. Hence, the street surrounding the pond was named “Lafayette Park”. His mission was to thank the war veterans who greeted him in droves throughout his visit. We are fortunate to have had such a visitor to Goldfish Pond.
