100 Years of Boston Comedy
June 22, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT
Veteran arts journalist (Boston Phoenix, Stuff@Night, Boston Globe) & Lynner Nick Zaino explores Boston’s long history of comedy, from vaudeville to YouTube, highlighting some of the personalities that have defined laughter in America for 100 years in this free lecture.
The timeframe for the story actually stretches back a bit longer than 100 years, to vaudeville, starting with B.F. Keith’s Theatre on Tremont St in Boston, which opened in 1894, and vaudeville stars like Eva Tanguay and Fred Allen. It moves through radio stars like Bob & Ray, risqué musicians Rusty Warren and Tom Lehrer in the 50s and 60s, Bill Dana,Norm Crosby, Jane Curtain, Jay Leno, and then the explosion of comedians in the 80s Boom that produced Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Bobcat Goldthwait, Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, Marc Maron, and on through more recent notables like Eugene Mirman, Mike Birbiglia, Sam Jay, and Ziwe.
