Reading Frederick Douglass Together 2023

July 3, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm EDT

The community is welcome to join us for food and music as we recite “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.” A famous speech written by Frederick Douglass. This will be the first year North Shore Juneteenth Association will have the honor of collaborating with Wendy Joseph to organize the community reading of  Frederick Douglass’ speech, “The Meaning of July Fourth For The Negro”. This event will feature musical performance, dance performance, vendors, and more!
The following words are from an article. Link is provided below:
Douglass’ message — about America struggling to live up to the lofty goals it set for itself at the founding — continues to be relevant, says Blight.
“He would use the Fourth of July for its irony over and over and over, just like the Declaration of Independence is used to remind the country of its potential and promise, and to him, race was always the measure of that,” he says. “America, by its nature, is never quite fulfilling all of those promises.”

The above information was submitted to us by the North Shore Juneteenth Association.
