SUMMARY:“Glitter Road”: A Reading and Conversation with January Gill O’Neil
DESCRIPTION:Click for full-resolution flier\nFrom Massachusetts Center for the Book: Join the North Shore Community College Lynn Campus Library for an afternoon with January Gill O’Neil\, author of Glitter Road\, a Massachusetts Book Awards Honors title in poetry. O’Neil will read from her celebrated collection\, speak about her writing process\, and share insights into her approach to crafting poems before opening the floor for an audience Q&A. She will also lead a brief writing prompt for anyone who would like to participate. \nGlitter Road opens in the wake of loss\, deep pain\, and anger\, yet the poems insist on finding flashes of celebration and joy—even if that joy is simply\, in the spirit of Lucille Clifton\, “what i have shaped into / a kind of life\,” the triumph of survival and self-recognition. With formal dexterity and richly charged syntax\, O’Neil’s poems resist the silences of fear\, grief\, desire\, and anxiety\, speaking aloud what is so often left unspoken in both private and public life. Her interrogations of race thread through the collection\, shaping a speaker whose history—personal and collective—unfolds with carefully rendered detail. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nJANUARY GILL O’NEIL is a poet and author of Glitter Road\, Rewilding\, Misery Islands\, and Underlife. Her work has been featured in The New York Times Magazine\, American Poetry Review\, and Poetry\, among other publications. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem\, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund\, among others. O’Neil is an associate professor at Salem State University and lives in Massachusetts. \nMore about the event by clicking here.\nTo learn more please email info@massbook.org

SUMMARY:20th Annual May Day March & Rally
DESCRIPTION:From the New Lynn Coalition: The New Lynn Coalition and the North Shore Labor Council\, along with local community organizations and labor allies\, will hold the 20th Annual Lynn May Day Rally and March on Friday\, May 1 at 5:30 p.m.\, in observance of International Workers’ Day. \nThe program begins with a rally on the steps of Lynn City Hall\, followed by a circular march along Market Street\, Liberty Street\, Washington Street\, and Essex Street\, returning to City Hall steps for a closing gathering. \nOrganizers say the march is intended to bring workers\, immigrants\, and families into the public square together to highlight ongoing struggles around wages\, housing\, immigration policy\, and peace. \nMay Day\, also known as International Workers’ Day\, has its roots in the 1886 Haymarket movement in Chicago\, when workers organized for the eight-hour workday. In Lynn\, the tradition dates back to 2006 with the “Day Without Immigrants” action\, which helped launch a sustained local movement for worker and immigrant rights. \nTanveer Malik\, Executive Director of the New Lynn Coalition\, said “On this May Day workers immigrants and families stand together in unity to demand fair housing an end to mass deportations and war and to build and empower working class communities across our neighborhoods where no one is judged or pushed aside because of religion race or color and where everyone can live with safety stability and dignity” \nAdam “Kaz” Kaszynski\, President of the North Shore Labor Council\, AFL-CIO\, said\, “May Day continues our long tradition of celebrating the history of the labor movement while still working to build power locally. We believe that the labor movement is strongest when firmly rooted in our communities and the struggles we all face. That’s why International Workers Day isn’t just about celebrating the history of the labor movement\, it’s about continuing to fight for justice for all oppressed people. We’re proud to stand with local communities fighting for housing justice\, an end to the mass deportations\, and an end to the endless wars that leave us all worse off. This May Day we’re fighting for the rights of all working people”. \nThis year’s May Day demands include: \n\nA Fighting Labor Movement\nEnd Mass Deportations\nStop the Endless Wars\nHousing Justice – Rent Control Now\n\nThe event is open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend\, bring signs and banners\, and stand in solidarity with workers\, immigrants\, and families across Lynn. \n
