SUMMARY:Building Community Roots
DESCRIPTION:At the heart of the Galleries At LynnArts’ latest community art project stands a powerful symbol: the Banyan Tree. But what makes this tree so special? Across cultures and generations\, the Banyan Tree has carried deep meaning—and it’s the perfect inspiration for a collaborative creation rooted in connection\, care\, and growth. \nIn many parts of the world—especially India and Southeast Asia—the Banyan Tree is more than just a tree. \n\n\nIn Hinduism\, it represents immortality\, spiritual wisdom\, and divine shelter\, often linked to gods like Vishnu and Shiva. \n\n\nIn Buddhism\, it’s connected to the Bodhi Tree\, under which the Buddha found enlightenment. It stands for resilience and inner peace. \n\n\nIn local villages\, it’s a natural meeting place—serving as a center for community and storytelling. \n\n\nThe Banyan Tree is unique in how it grows: from a single seed\, it sends down aerial roots that become trunks\, creating a network of support. \nThis makes it a powerful metaphor for: \n\n\nInterconnection – each root and branch supports the whole \n\n\nCommunity strength – many parts forming a unified structure \n\n\nLegacy – standing tall through generations\, holding memory and history \n\n\nWhy the Banyan Tree for Our Project?\nOur paper Banyan Tree is built just like its real-life counterpart—from many individual contributions. Each piece you add is a root\, a leaf\, a branch in our growing collective story. \nIt symbolizes: \n\n\nHealing and hope \n\n\nCultural diversity \n\n\nShared creativity \n\n\nTogether\, we’re building more than a tree. We’re growing a living work of art that reflects who we are—stronger together. \nWhen can I stop by?\n\nWednesday\, July 2 from 12-6pm\nThursday\, July 3 from 12-4pm\nFriday\, July 4 from 12-6pm\nSaturday\, July 5 from 12-4pm\nTuesday\, July 8 from 12-4pm\nWednesday\, July 9 from 12-6pm\nThursday\, July 10 from 12-4pm\nFriday\, July 11 from 12-6pm\nSaturday\, July 12 from 12-4pm\nTuesday\, July 15 from 12-4pm\nWednesday\, July 16 from 12-6pm\nThursday\, July 17 from 12-4pm\nFriday\, July 18 from 12-6pm\nSaturday\, July 19 from 12-4pm

SUMMARY:Reading Frederick Douglass Together 2025
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Frederick Douglass Reading\, hosted by the North Shore Juneteenth Association and sponsored by Mass Humanities\, Thursday July 3rd at Frederick Douglass Park will begin at 11am with the unveiling of a new Frederick Douglass wayfinding sign. \nThe sign’s design and text were the result of a multiyear collaboration between Barbara Buls of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)\, Tom Dalton\, author of Frederick Douglass\, the Lynn Years\, Doneeca Thurston-Chaves\, Executive Director of the Lynn Museum\, and Wendy Joseph\, Curator of the Grand Army of the Republic Hall & Museum. \nSincere thanks to State Senator Brendan Creighton\, whose initiative helped launch the partnership between the DCR and local Lynn historians. We anticipate participation from representatives of the City of Lynn Mayor’s office and members of our State Delegation—so there will be some ceremonial remarks as well. \nFor more information please email nsjuneteenth@gmail.com or call 781-315-2077. \n\nThe above information was submitted to us by the North Shore Juneteenth Association.
