Diverse People United announces a Rally for Solidarity on Saturday, 17 April from 4-6pm at the Frederick Douglass Bandstand at Lynn Commons to speak out against systemic racism and protect our Asian & Asian-American communities in the city of Lynn and the North Shore of Boston.

Building on last summer’s successful rallies to bring attention to the issues of police brutality and civil rights violations and to demand change through the Occupy Wyoma Square protest, DPU stands in solidarity with our Asian and Asian-American communities and seeks to center their voices and stories of our southeast Asian, Asian women, and Asian LGBTQ+ communities and to resoundingly reject the harmful “model minority” myth. The rise in anti-Asian and Asian-American hate crimes and the silence of local media and local authorities are unacceptable and are not representative of the people of Lynn and our North Shore neighbors. We want better, we deserve better, and we will do better.

“We are rallying to resist the erasure of the Asian struggle, contribution, and existence,” local activist Kim Yen Tran states.

We are centering the voices of our Asian and Asian-American community members, specifically southeast Asian women and LGBTQ+ voices, and creating a space to listen to their stories, hear their concerns and aspirations, and become allies in our shared struggle for representation, for healing, and for empowerment. We welcome all to join our Rally for Solidarity to bring our collective hearts, minds, and ears together for positive, constructive change.

Founded in 2020, Diverse People United is a non-profit committed to community building and transformative healing in the city of Lynn. We are a coalition of diverse individuals with a passion for inspiring youth leadership, channeling leadership into social action, and addressing systemic trauma within communities of color. We provide people in our community with the tools and support they need to heal and grow. We advocate on behalf of marginalized groups and individuals. We are committed to educating policy-makers at the local and state levels of the issues impacting our community, and work with them to create new legislation that disrupts the status quo. DPU inspires discourse about hard subjects between people of all backgrounds. By modeling civic engagement to the youth, we prepare the next generation of leaders and change makers.

MBTA to hold virtual public hearing on Fare Evasion Regulations on April 15th

The MBTA will conduct a virtual public hearing on April 15 to hear feedback from riders and stakeholders regarding proposed Fare Evasion Regulations 703 CMR 5.00 to decrease fine levels associated with fare evasion on the MBTA.

As a part of the Fare Transformation project, the MBTA is moving to all-door boarding to make bus, Green Line, and Mattapan Line trolley services faster and more reliable. A key component of this move to all-door boarding is a shift to a fare verification system in which riders carry and present proof that they have paid to use the system. The Transportation Bond Bill, adopted in January 2021, gave the MBTA the authority to build a team to verify fares and issue fare evasion citations. The Bill also called for the MBTA to set fare citation fine levels through a regulatory, rather than statutory, process. The MBTA has proposed decreasing fine levels from their current minimum of $100 for a first offense to $50. Riders and community members can review theproposed regulations (703 CMR 5.00) on the MBTA website.

As a part of the regulatory process, the MBTA will hold a virtual public hearing on April 15 at 6 PM to hear feedback from riders and stakeholders on the proposed regulations. Testimony may be presented orally at the public hearing or in writing. While the MBTA encourages all interested parties to submit testimony in advance of the hearing, written comments will be accepted until 5 PM on Friday, April 30, 2021. Written comments must be submitted by email or postal mail to the following address. Email is strongly preferred.
