City of Lynn Requesting Community Input on G.E.A.A Field Design Alternatives

The City of Lynn is redesigning the G.E.A.A field to provide improved recreational facilities that are aligned with the community’s needs, and an eye towards the future by responding to the effects of climate change. The design will include Improvements that will reduce flooding and increase shading and green space, as part of the City’s efforts to increase climate resilience and public safety. The historic park, which has been used for more than 100 years, is located at the last segment of the Strawberry Brook Conduit near where it empties to the Saugus River. The fields were once part of a wetland associated with the Strawberry Brook and Little River, and along with the surrounding neighborhood, suffer from frequent flooding. 

The City is seeking input from the community on design alternatives for G.E.A.A. Field’s future. Community feedback is vital to understand how the field can best reflect the needs of the community. All members of the community and users of the park are invited to share their hopes for the new park through an online survey. The City has created a short video presentation providing an overview of the planned improvements and design options for consideration as a companion to the survey. The video presentation and survey are both available in English and Spanish and are linked below. The City will be accepting survey responses until February 9^th.

“The City is prioritizing the redesign of the GEAA field to mitigate environmental concerns that directly impact our residents,” said Mayor Jared C. Nicholson. “Creating a more climate resilient community is a team effort and we encourage residents to contribute to the survey to help us build on sustainable solutions.”

Once community input is received through the survey, a refined design will be generated to share with the community in the spring of 2024 for additional feedback. The latest information about project updates is available on the project webpage found by clicking here.

This project is funded through a grant award from the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action Grant program, which provides technical and financial support for cities and towns to implement projects to increase resiliency for climate change.

“I’ve been working hard with our delegation, and the Mayor Nicholson and his team to secure funding for this work, and I’m excited we are moving into the design phase in a collaborative way,” Said Council President Walsh. “I’m looking forward to seeing transformation of GEAA Field into a resilient recreational resource for our community for years to come.”
