From Neighbor to Neighbor: Neighbor to Neighbor strongly condemns the detention of its member and asylum seeker Emmanual Kenga after he was detained by ICE during their increased efforts in the area.
Community members have described Emmanuel as a neighbor and a pillar of service and compassion. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was currently employed as a home health aide to senior citizens and as a food delivery worker for a mobile pantry serving families in need. He is also a member of multiple community organizations across the city, vested in assisting others in need.
Emmanuel was detained on Wednesday afternoon after appearing in person for his scheduled asylum appointment in Burlington. When he failed to show up for work the next day, it was revealed that he had been taken into custody at the appointment. This detention comes days after news media confirmed the ramping up of Operation Patriot 2.0 by ICE in the Boston area, a move that both Mayor Michelle Wu and Governor Maura Healey have spoken against.
Emmanuel and his family fled the war-torn African state after his family was attacked and his father was murdered by supporters of political leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“This detention is unjust and unacceptable. Emmanuel was doing the right thing by following the law, yet still he was detained and taken away from his community without any notice or information,” said Danny Timpona, Organizing Director at Neighbor to Neighbor and Lynn community member. “His detention is a clear attack on the values of compassion, justice, and solidarity that are the very foundation on which our society is built.”
Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts calls on local, state, and federal leaders to ensure Emmanuel’s release and protect his right to asylum. The Lynn community cannot afford to lose a man whose life embodies service, courage, and hope.
