Every day, a return to “normal” feels a little bit closer. For most of us, this means seeing our families, celebrating holidays together, and sharing a good meal with friends. But what will a return to normal mean for the most vulnerable?

According to a recent article in The Boston Globe, 1.6 million adults in Massachusetts are food insecure. People wait in long lines at food pantries for a simple bag of groceries. Homeless and transient individuals struggle to find a safe place to sleep. For those who exist on the fringes of communities ravaged by a global pandemic and its related hunger and housing crises, life will never be what most of us consider “normal.” But, thanks to you and your ongoing support, we have been able to help.

Last year, your generous donations helped to launch the Phoenix Food Hub — a true community-wide collaboration led by Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) as part of the Lynn Food Security Task Force, a consortium of local health and human services agencies. This unique project combines the traditional concept of a food pantry with a new and ground-breaking model, one which provides a wide array of hunger-related “wrap-around” supports to people of all ages — things like nutrition screening and counseling; home-delivered meals; housing advocacy; benefits counseling; information about other helpful community resources; and a teaching kitchen.

More than a bag of groceries, Phoenix Food Hub hopes to change lives by challenging population health trends and interrupting generational cycles of poverty and hunger. People will better understand the connection between what they eat and their overall health. Families will learn to prepare nutritious meals together. Homeless individuals will receive help finding safe housing they can afford. Your support makes all this and more possible!

Here’s hoping for a return to a new and even better “normal” for all of us in 2022. Thank you for your generous support of Greater Lynn Senior Services and, more importantly, the vulnerable consumers we serve.

Sincerely,

Kathryn C. Burns, MHA
Chief Executive Officer, GLSS
