Breast Cancer Awareness Month

An international health campaign honored every October focusing on promoting screening and reducing the risk of breast cancer, supporting those affected by breast cancer, and advocating for care and continued research.

History:

First began in 1985 as a week-long awareness campaign by the American Cancer Society and the Imperial Chemical Industries, it eventually became a month-long event. The “pink ribbon” that has become a symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month was first introduced in the 1990s by Charlotte Haley who made peach ribbons by hand to raise awareness on cancer prevention. The first distribution of the pink ribbons was in 1991 at the Komen Race for the Cure in New York City and boosted in popularity in 1992 when Estée Lauder in partnership with Self magazine distributed millions of pink ribbons nationwide.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation:

  • 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime
  • There is a 1 in 43 chance of dying from breast cancer
  • In 2025, an estimated 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer
  • There are about 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

Screening and Reducing Risk:

  • Women who are 40 to 74 years old should get a mammogram every 2 years, earlier if you are high risk
  • Performing breast self-exams regularly for any changes can help with early detection
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol intake, and not smoking can help reduce the risk of breast cancer
