Lynn/Swampscott Offering Summer Internship Opportunity
The City of Lynn and Town of Swampscott will be conducting a pilot program this summer using ultraviolet (UV) light to disinfect stormwater before it discharges onto a public beach. The communities of Lynn and Swampscott are looking for intern assistance with daily sampling of various parameters of stormwater upstream/downstream of the UV pilot unit to evaluate the efficacy of UV as a disinfectant for the purpose of deactivating bacteria and protecting public health at a recreational swimming beach.
They are in search of 1 to 2 undergrad or graduate level student(s) to assist with the water quality sampling associated with this pilot. This is an unpaid, three-month internship.
The testing will need to be complete each weekday and it will take up to 3 hours to conduct the testing. The exact timing of the testing may need to vary based upon the tidal conditions. All sampling will be done at the UV unit; no beach sampling will be conducted. The sampling is expected to include grab sampling from the UV pilot tank to be analyzed in a lab as well as using on-site multi-parameter water quality probes and a benchtop UV transmittance apparatus. Training on testing methods and instruments used in the sampling will be provided.
