From the Lynn Youth Street Outreach Advocacy (LYSOA): Seven students from Lynn Youth Street Outreach Advocacy (LYSOA) were tasked  with creating tri-fold displays about community issues impacting young people and our community at large.

As part of their summer work crew program, Lynn Youth Street Outreach Advocacy (LYSOA) wanted to add an educational component this year to get the youth more engaged with their community. This project was done in collaboration with the City of Lynn’s Public Health Department, and topics were chosen that were relevant to and impacting Lynn residents. The three topics explored were the Opioid Epidemic, Homelessness, and Gang & Gun violence.

Over 7 weeks seven youth worked on this project, split into groups. To complete their research they used the internet, talked with community members impacted by these issues, and gathered resources from local businesses and organizations. Each display created contains information on the history about the issue, the causes, the impact, and solutions.

While most of the youth were new to this summer program, some of the youth participated in last year’s program. The youth, ages 14-18 from different schools in Lynn, participate in LYSOA programming year-round, several have been involved for close to 3 years.

The displays can be viewed in the hallways by Room 103 in Lynn City Hall until early October.
