MBTA: Fare Transformation Virtual Public Meetings to be held in 2 weeks | May 13, 2021

Two virtual public meetings are being held on May 25th & 27th regarding the MBTA’s Fare Transformation program and future changes to MBTA fare rules.

The MBTA’s new fare payment system is being built to adapt to changes in how people travel, providing flexibility to introduce new fare structures, new ways to pay, and new passes in the future.

To enable several benefits of this system like all-door boarding and contactless payments, changes need to be made to the MBTA’s fare rules. Transfer rules also need to be adjusted as all MBTA modes are brought into the same fare system. The MBTA is also seeking input on other possibilities for future fares, products, and integrations.

More information about changes to fare rules in the next generation of the MBTA’s fare system is available online.

The Fare Transformation team now requests the help and input of the public as more is learned about how riders currently use the MBTA and how fare rules may be adjusted to accommodate their use. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the following virtual public meetings to learn more:
