National Grid Selected for Department of Energy Funding to Deploy Advanced Technology Across New England Transmission Network

From National Grid: National Grid has been selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Energy for its Dynamic Rating Enhancement Advancements & Modernization (DREAM) project, which will use advanced transmission technologies to help improve grid reliability, increase system efficiency, and support growing electricity demand.  

The project will enhance visibility into transmission line performance, enabling National Grid to make smarter operating and planning decisions and obtain more value from existing infrastructure across the Company’s transmission network in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Subject to negotiations and a final agreement, the award represents approximately $49 million in funding for the four-year initiative, which would begin in 2027.

The award, part of the Department of Energy’s Speed to Power (SPARK) program, seeks to accelerate deployment of advanced technologies that can expand grid capacity, improve reliability, and reduce costs for customers. The DREAM project supports National Grid’s broader commitment to building a smarter, more resilient energy system while delivering value for customers.
