National Grid to Hold Annual Week of Service in Massachusetts

Over 350 National Grid Employees Mobilize for Five Days of Community Impact Across Massachusetts

As part of National Grid’s ongoing commitment to support customers and communities, the company today announced it will kick off its annual week of service on Monday, September 9. Through this effort, more than 350 National Grid New England employees participate in making a tangible difference across Massachusetts.

During National Grid’s Week of Service, employee volunteers will contribute 1,500 hours to support 23 vital community organizations across the state, including in Boston, Cambridge, Chicopee, Easton, Grafton, Harvard, Lynn, North Adams, and Worcester. Local initiatives range from constructing beds for children in need, assembling STEM kits for middle school students, enhancing food security, and improving community spaces.

National Grid team members will take part in the following volunteer activities:

September 9

  • Community Servings (Jamaica Plain): Prepping and packing medically tailored meals for clients who have chronic and critical illnesses
  • Easton Children’s Museum (Easton): Weeding and planting at the museum’s Outdoor Wild Place space and organizing Maker Space STEM activities
  • Save the Harbor Save the Bay (Dorchester): Cleaning and sprucing up Malibu Beach
  • The Greater Boston Food Bank (Boston): Packing family meal boxes and assisting with food sorting projects

September 10

  • A Bed for Every Child (Lynn): Constructing beds for children in need
  • Climate Cools Schools (Lowell): Planting, weeding and beautifying garden beds
  • Food Bank of Western MA (Chicopee): Sorting and packing frozen meat, produce, and dry goods
  • Girl Scouts of Eastern MA (Plymouth): Painting picnic benches at Camp Wind in the Pines
  • School on Wheels (East Bridgewater): Assembling backpacks for pre-K through 12th-grade students for Schools on Wheels MA’s 2024-2025 Backpack “Tools for School” Program
  • The Food Project (Dorchester, Lynn & Wenham sites): Preparing beds, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing vegetables, and cleaning up the land

September 11

  • Cradles to Crayons (Newton): Quality-checking, sorting, and packaging clothing donations for children in need
  • Dream Day Camp (Brewster): Clean-up and close down Dream Day Camp
  • Girls, Inc. of Worcester (Worcester): Clean-up and close down Kinneywood Camp
  • Hope and Comfort (Needham): Packing hygiene kits for children and adults in need
  • Schools on Wheels (East Bridgewater): Assembling backpacks for pre-K through 12th-grade students for Schools on Wheels MA’s 2024-2025 Backpack “Tools for School” Program
  • Science from Scientists (Waltham): Creating and assembling 400 STEM kits for upper middle school students for Science from Scientists
  • Waltham Fields Community Farm (Waltham): Preparing beds, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing vegetables, and cleaning up the land

September 12

  • Girls Inc. of Lynn & Boston (Lynn): Preparing middle and elementary school classrooms
  • Berkshire Mobile Market (North Adams): Assisting with market setup, arranging product displays, and servicing the stands for the market
  • Charles River Conservancy (Cambridge): Painting benches, removing litter, and caring for the garden beds
  • Community Harvest Project (Harvard): Picking, sorting, bagging, and boxing apples and Harvard farm
  • Pernet Family Health (Worcester): Assisting with painting, yard work, and maintenance
  • Posse Foundation (Boston): Working with students on their interview skills
  • Preservation Worcester (Worcester): Painting the front porch, refinishing furniture and assisting with landscaping
  • Schools on Wheels (East Bridgewater): Assembling backpacks for pre-K through 12th-grade students for Schools on Wheels MA’s 2024-2025 Backpack “Tools for School” Program
  • Science Club for Girls (Cambridge): Organizing materials for the Junior Mentor program supporting 8th-12th grade girls to deepen their STEM and leadership skillsz
  • Veterans Inc. (Worcester): Enhancing the gymnasium space to create a more welcoming and dignified environment for veterans and their families

September 13

  • Community Harvest Project (Grafton): Picking, sorting, bagging, and boxing apples at Grafton farm
  • Cradles to Crayons (Newton): Quality-checking, sorting, and packaging clothing donations for children in need
  • Schools on Wheels (East Bridgewater): Assembling backpacks for pre-K through 12th-grade students for Schools on Wheels MA’s 2024-2025 Backpack “Tools for School” Program
  • The Greater Boston Food Bank (Boston): Packing family meal boxes and assisting with food sorting projects

The Week of Service is part of National Grid’s “Grid for Good” program, a comprehensive corporate responsibility and impact initiative. This program underscores National Grid’s commitment to community engagement through volunteerism and charitable contributions, particularly in areas such as workforce development, STEM education, economic opportunity, social justice, and environmental stewardship.

In addition to volunteer service, National Grid has plans to further its commitment to the community through financial support. Through Grid for Good, National Grid will contribute more than $2 million in funding to organizations that align with its three responsibility and impact pillars:

  2. Economic opportunity and social justice
  3. Environmental stewardship and sustainability – Focusing on historically underrepresented and overburdened communities.

In addition to Grid for Good in Massachusetts, National Grid has a company-wide commitment to 500,000 employee volunteer hours by 2030, outlined in its renewed Responsible Business Charter.
