Winter storm impacts Southern New England, updates from City of Lynn
The National Weather Service’s Boston branch has issued a Winter Storm Warning for most of southern New England ahead of the storm. It will be in effect from Wednesday at 7PM until Thursday at 1PM.
Snow will be heavy at times overnight, with rates as high as 1-2 inches an hour, before tapering off by Thursday afternoon. If you must travel it is being recommended that you keep an extra flashlight, food, & water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
In addition to the heavy snowfall there will be strong wind gusts with the approaching storm, particularly along the coast (35-45 mph) and the Cape and Islands (50-60 mph). This may result in isolated power outages. Please check the National Grid Power Outage map by clicking here if you experience any issues.

The storm is expected to reach our area around 9pm tonight. As of 12pm the NWS predicted the Lynn area will receive 8-12 inches. It is recommended to watch the updates for this storm, as it is gearing up to be a significant hit to the area but the track has kept changing the last few days. For up-to-date info. please follow the National Weather Service – Boston’s Facebook page.We will update this part of the post with any and all information we receive for the storm today from the City of Lynn.

A Snow Emergency Parking Ban will go into effect in the City of Lynn starting at 9:00 PM tonight, Wednesday, December 16, 2020. Please note that the blue lights at various intersections will be turned on early.Residents can move their vehicles to designated city parking lots as soon as possible.
- Lynn City Hall will continue to be closed to the public on Thursday & Friday December 17th & 18th offering city services through staff working remotely.
- Lynn Public Schools will operate completely remotely both Thursday and Friday this week. Meal pickup at the designated schools will continue as planned on Friday.
- Waste Management Trash and Recycling Collection will be delayed on Thursday, December 17th to Friday, December 18th, with Friday’s normal scheduled pickup done on Saturday.
SNOW EMERGENCY PARKING BAN:
No vehicles may park on a public street, sidewalk or at end of dead-end streets. You may face a $169 tow fee, $150 ticket and a $35 a day storage fee. The tow lot entrance is on Centre St (behind the Western Ave Fire Station).

The COVID-19 testing sites at Lynn English and Federal St. are closed tomorrow. Lynn Community Health Center’s COVID-19 testing site will be also be closed tomorrow.

The Salvation Army food bank is closed for the remainder of the week.

Due to the current weather situation, the Governor has directed that non-emergency state employees working in Executive Branch agencies should not report to their workplaces on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Employees who have the capacity to telework will be expected to do so in accordance with the Telework Policy.

From the Salvation Army: No food pantry tomorrow due to the storm! We are going to TRY and open our main building to continue distributing toys for those who preregistered and selected Thursday December 17th. We will most likely be there later in the morning while our staff tries to shovel out and drive safely.

MBTA Joins Public Transit Systems Around the Country in Urging Congress to #SavePublicTransit
APTA-organized day of action and engagement will take place on Tuesday, December 15.
The MBTA joined fellow APTA members and industry partners on Tuesday, December 15, to collectively fight to #SavePublicTransit with a day of mobilization and engagement.
“Without federal assistance, we will continue to face tough operational decisions and challenging choices for current and future service,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “We join our partner agencies in strongly urging Congress to provide emergency funding so that we can continue to provide essential transportation services to our most transit-critical riders as well as essential workforces.”
Organized by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), #SavePublicTransit Day will shine the light on the dire financial crisis facing the public transportation industry and urge elected officials to take immediate action.
It is critical that Congress move forward and provide emergency funding for public transit in the session before Congress recesses for the holiday. The industry is calling on Congress and the Administration to provide at least $32 billion in emergency funding to ensure that public transit agencies can survive and help our communities and nation recover from the economic fallout of the pandemic.
Two days ago, the MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board approved a series of short-term service changes that better match current and near-term low ridership demand and help the T address projected budget gaps. Adding back service will depend on a number of factors, including public health guidance (including the continued need for social distancing), the timing of the Commonwealth’s post-vaccination re-opening plan, and the return of durable ridership. With emergency federal funding, the MBTA can avoid the potential for additional service reductions and may be able to restore some service sooner than anticipated. These federal funds will also allow the MBTA to maintain service, avoid cuts to its state of good repair efforts, and support future service in the face of ongoing low projected ridership. Understanding that the future of transportation may look different than it was pre-COVID, federal funding will also provide the T more time to plan for these changes in order to make better service decisions.
“Immediate action needs to be taken to address the public transportation industry’s dire financial situation so that we can continue to serve essential employees every day and can help with the nation’s economic recovery,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “The industry’s very survival is at stake.”

From Mayor McGee’s office: The Lynn Public Health Department has confirmed that as of today, the number of active, confirmed positive COVID-19 cases is 1,682 with 187 new cases today. 7,989 Lynn residents have recovered and 146 have died. The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Lynn since March 21, 2020, including those who have died and recovered, is 9,817. COVID-19 Stop the Spread Testing Cancelled Thursday, 12/17
All COVID-19 testing is cancelled at tomorrow, December 17th due to the impending snowstorm. Testing is scheduled to resume at the Federal Street Lot behind the Western Avenue Fire Station both Friday and Saturday from 8AM-6PM and at the Lynn Community Health Center on Friday at their usual hours. Testing will NOT be available at the Lynn English Parking Lot Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
