__________________________

Dear LPS Community,

I am writing to inform you that I will be resigning as Superintendent of the Lynn Public Schools effective August 12, 2022.  In my tenure as an educator, there is no decision over which I agonized more. The entire Lynn community has been extremely good to me and I sincerely hope that the community believes that I have given my all as Deputy Superintendent (school years 2015-17) and Superintendent (school years 2018-22).  My decision, albeit untimely, is the best for my health and my family at this time.

When the Lynn School Committee bestowed upon me the privilege to lead our district in 2018, I promised to do so with students at the core of every decision, every initiative.  I promised to solicit and honor the voice and input of all community stakeholders – to establish or refine partnerships in the city and beyond – to eliminate every barrier and create every opportunity for LPS students to realize their individual dreams.   I have kept these promises front of mind and in the center of my heart each day as superintendent.

As a community, we have made great strides in recent years.  Following the stakeholder-developed strategic plan, we have significantly increased mental health supports for all students and supports for multilingual learners and students with disabilities.  We successfully introduced dual language programming at the elementary level and expanded early college participation at the high school level to the second highest in the state, which includes the recently introduced Early College High School.  This year, we celebrated a record high graduation rate with the class of 2021, a record low dropout rate, and notable increases in the racial and linguistic diversity of LPS staff and leadership.  All of this happened under uniquely challenging circumstances, which is a true testament to resilience and commitment of this community.

The Lynn School Committee will make a determination on the next step for the superintendency.  Nonetheless, the leadership structure in the Lynn Public Schools remains stable and strong.  Nearly all building and district leaders remain in place.  That said, I have always believed that success in schools depends in large part on the quality of the faculty and staff.  Accordingly, I am confident that the LPS will continue to excel and persevere.

I extend my sincere gratitude for the honor of leading the Lynn Public Schools.  It is an experience I will treasure and reflect upon fondly. I am forever indebted.   I look forward to learning about the wonderful things this school community will do in the years to come.

With deep appreciation,

Patrick Tutwiler, PhD
