Last night, the U.S. House voted to fund nearly $10 million in local community projects that Congressman Seth Moulton secured for the people of Massachusetts’ Sixth Congressional District. This funding was included in this year’s annual government funding package and directly responds to some of the most pressing needs in northeast Massachusetts.“The House moved forward 10 important community projects that will improve the lives of people in northeast Massachusetts. These projects will protect our environment, improve public safety, and increase access to healthcare, public transportation and affordable housing in our communities,” Congressman Moulton said. “It is my honor to fight for the funding that benefits the people of Massachusetts’ Sixth Congressional District.”

The projects championed by Congressman Moulton include:

  • $2,250,000 for the City of Newburyport’s Bulkhead Renovation project, to renovate public infrastructure of the central Newburyport waterfront to protect local businesses, homes, parks, and boardwalk from storm surge and flooding
  • $1,200,000 for design and construction of the Wakefield Broadway Commuter Rail Crossingto install quad railroad gates and pedestrian ADA mobility enhancements so the crossing will meet Quiet Zone requirements, increase safety, and provide easier access to local businesses and schools
  • $1,200,000 for MassDOT’s engineering, design, and development of unfinished sections of the Border-to-Boston Trail in Peabody, Boxford, Georgetown, Newbury, Marblehead, and Swampscott
  • $1,000,000 for North Shore Community Health to expand their primary care, dental, mental health, and urgent care facilities in Salem, Peabody and Gloucester which serve more than 13,000 residents of the North Shore
  • $900,000 for North Shore Community College in Danvers to renovate its Anatomy and Physiology Lab used by Allied Health students. NSCC is one of the only community colleges in Massachusetts without updated science labs
  • $850,000 for the Essex County Sherriff Department’s STAR Program, a treatment and rehabilitation program for incarcerated people, with the goal of reducing recidivism and providing the tools for individuals to become productive members of society
  • $786,892 for Open Door to expand the North Shore Hunger Network and build a new commercial kitchen and food pantry to increase capacity to acquire, prepare and distribute healthy food in northeast Essex County
  • $700,000 for Harborlight Community Partners to support new affordable housing development in Beverly.  The project will offer affordable housing, childcare, computer labs, learning spaces, community gardens and more
  • $700,000 for the Essex County Community Foundation Mental Health Initiative to address the mental health challenges facing populations disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the county
  • $372,000 for the City of Salem to design the South Salem commuter rail stop on MBTA’s Newbury/Rockport line, located near Salem State University and the North Shore Medical Center

The 12-bill government funding package will help middle class families with the cost of living, create American jobs, support the vulnerable, and work to help small businesses and restaurants.

This legislation is scheduled to be voted on by the U.S. Senate next week and is expected to then be signed into law by President Biden. A detailed summary of the bill is available here
