Voting info. & statistics from Lynn Chief of Elections Janet Rowe

Ballot drop box in Johnson St. lot

We reached out to the City of Lynn’s City Clerk & Election Chief Janet Rowe to get some information about how early voting has gone in the City of Lynn, and what protections are being put in place for both early voting and on Election Day next Tuesday.

Early voting has gone well in the City of Lynn. Those that haven’t voted early can still vote today and tomorrow from 8:30am-4pm & Friday from 8:30am-12:30pm at City Hall. Voters only can enter through the front doors, handicap voters may enter through the Johnson Street side entrance.

Inside main entrance to City Hall, procedures set up for distancing & sanitation.

For those worried about the risk of COVID-19 while voting early, it should be noted that measures have been put in place at City Hall to ensure sanitation & distancing are enforced. A “one-way” system has been developed for movement, pens are regularly sanitized, & contact tracing is being done for voters. Voters will be restricted to just the voting area, anyone needing to do business in City Hall will be directed to the Johnson Street entrance to “sign in”.

If you are voting by mail but wish to drop off your ballot there is an officiasl ballot drop box in the Johnson Street lot. The City of Lynn Election office has put forth several protections to ensure your vote is protected and eventually counted on Election Day. According to Rowe, “Folks can drop their ballot in 24 hours day.  We have camera surveillance, extra lighting and police will be patrolling until November 3rd.  We check the box every 2 hours.”

Extra poll workers have been hired to assist on Election Day itself, social distance and mask wearing will be enforced as well. “Please be patient and kind as our Poll workers are safely checking voters in and adhering to all Covid-19 rules and regulations from the State and our Public Health Director”, said Rowe.

In addition to the above information, Rowe also shared with us some statistics for voting thus far in Lynn. Back in 2016 there were 52,485 registered voters in Lynn, this year there are 56,041. Results for past elections can be found by clicking here.

Lynn English student receives Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship

Photo courtesy of Lynn Public Schools Facebook page

The Herter Scholarship, from the MA Office of Student Finanical Assistance, provides financial assistance to Massachusetts students who demonstrate academic promise and aspirations for higher education. The special role of the Herter Scholarship, as an early identification program, is to recruit high school sophomores and juniors whose socio-economic backgrounds and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to persevere and attain their educational goals.

Since 1972, the Herter Scholarship has assisted Massachusetts students with their higher education costs. Each year, twenty-five students are selected as Herter Scholarship recipients. Awards are determined annually, based on a student’s college cost of attendance, demonstrated need, and the level of funding for the program. Scholarships are awarded for a maximum of four years, and are subject to annual appropriations from the Massachusetts Legislature. Tyler intends to apply to the United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy, Stanford University, University of California – Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UMass-Lowell, UMass-Amherst, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology and Wentworth Institute of Technology.
He plans to pursue a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Lynn English Principal Tessie Mower congratulates Tyler and all of the educators who supported him throughout the years!

From Mayor McGee’s office: The Lynn Public Health Department has confirmed that as of today, the number of active, confirmed positive COVID-19 cases is 484 with 43 new cases today. 4,962 Lynn residents have recovered and 122 have died. The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Lynn since March 21, 2020, including those who have died and recovered, is 5,568. Please visit the City of Lynn COVID-19 Data Dashboard which is updated daily.

As Halloween approaches and Lynn remains at a high risk for COVID-19, I strongly encourage all residents to refrain from engaging in high-risk Halloween activities. Instead, I hope we can find alternative ways to celebrate, as we have had to do all year, in order to keep our community healthy and safe. The CDC categorizes traditional Halloween activities, like trick or treating or indoor costume parties, as high-risk. The following link and attached flyer break down the CDC’s low, moderate and high-risk activities, which include some different ways to celebrate Halloween safely. The state has also released updated guidance for Halloween during COVID-19, which can be found here. Thank you for all of your continued cooperation and patience during these unprecedented times to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Stop the Spread Initiative Testing have been extended until December 31st.

Please visit http://www.ci.lynn.ma.us/covid19/resources.shtml#p7GPc1_2 for more information on how you can get a free COVID-19 test in the City of Lynn until December 31st.

We will continue to provide regular updates on COVID-19 through the City website (www.lynnma.gov), social media, and the Smart 911 emergency notification system (sign up at www.smart911.com).
