Tips from Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency:

  • Remain informed by receiving alerts before, during and after the extreme cold.
  • Have a plan that allows your family to safely shelter in place and keep your pets indoors.
  • During the cold, dress in several layers
  • Follow safety guidelines when using space heaters or fireplaces. If you lose heat move to a single room and cover the windows to preserve heat.
  • Run a small trickle of water from your faucets to keep your pipes from freezing.
  • Know the symptoms of cold related illnesses, including frostbite and seek medical attention if you or someone you know is showing signs
