Community Media Day on October 20th

Next Tuesday is Community Media Day! Community media encourages local dialogue, increases discourse around policy issues, fosters an understanding of local cultures, and shares information to improve our lives.

Community media encourages local dialogue, increases discourse around policy issues, fosters an understanding of local cultures, and shares information to improve our lives. LCTV provides coverage of many important community events, government meetings, and much more…but we can’t cover everything and everyone in our diverse city.

We need you to share the stories of our community. You can learn how to operate cameras, direct a show, or edit together your video at LCTV. We provide access to training, resources and facilities for local media makers to produce original programs by and for the community.

Build and improve your community by speaking up and getting started on #CommunityMediaDay. Contact us to find out how you can get involved!

Don’t want to create but still support us? Share a program you love from LCTV: be it our meeting coverage, member or staff produced, or your own show! Share a story of how Community Media helped you or inspired you! Be sure to tag us in your posts!

Weekly COVID-19 numbers from MA Dept. of Public Health

Click for full-resolution image

Every week on the MA Department of Public Health releases numbers for how COVID-19 has impacted the state, and we try to highlight some of these numbers so the community is informed. Their numbers factor in the past week as well as the week before, giving 2 weeks worth of data.

There are currently 85 communities in the yellow category (with 4-8 cases per 100K), & 63 communities in the red (with more than 8 cases per 100K). This means that in just the last 2 weeks the number of communities in the red category has tripled. The number of communities in the yellow has fluctuated, as communities go in and out of different categories, but has remained consistently high for weeks.

Between this and the fact that many communities in the yellow are close to becoming red there are fears of a second wave in the state. Many health care professionals warn that these communities in yellow need action to prevent their cases from increasing. However with news of many cities not cancelling Halloween, tourists still visiting Salem (despite most activities being cancelled), & many parents planing to trick or treat with their kids at least a spike in cases can be expected next month.

Below are the statistics for Lynn & the state, neither of which carry good news. The City of Lynn has been seeing decreasing numbers over the last several weeks, but this week the numbers increased. Additionally, at this time, MA as a whole qualifies as being in the red category. In just one week the rate per 100,000 went from 7.3 to 8.7.

City/Town Total Case Count Case Count (Last 14 Days) Average Daily Incidence Rate per 100,000 (Last 14 days) Relative Change in Case Counts Total Tests Total Tests (Last 14 days) Total Positive Tests (Last 14 days) Percent Positivity (Last 14 days) Change in Percent Positivity
Lynn 5,054 174 12.3 Higher 61,247 7104 235 3.31% Higher
STATEWIDE 138,083 8,443 8.7 Higher 4,896,199 865,003 10,090 1.17% Higher

In the past we have listed all of the communities in the red category, along with their statistics. Because of the increasing number of red communities we will not be listing them all until they have gone below 40 communities again. If you would like to find out full statistics you can find the full report from MA Dept. of Public Health by clicking here.

Statement from Mayor Thomas M. McGee on COVID-19 scam

Yesterday, I was made aware of a fraudulent scheme of two people claiming to be City of Lynn employees and charging local, Latino business owners money to place “COVID-19 Posters” in their stores and threatening their closure if they did not comply.

The Lynn Police Department immediately began to investigate this matter and were able to trace the posters back to a business in New York who admitted to selling the posters in several states but claims no knowledge of aggressive or fraudulent tactics by their salespeople. Restitution for the business owners is being coordinated by the Lynn Police, and the investigation will be referred to the Essex County District Attorney’s office who will determine whether or not charges will be filed.

Let me be clear that there is NO charge for businesses to place City and State COVID-19 materials in their stores, and our outreach with the Commonwealth is designed to ensure that we work with local businesses and organizations to encourage cooperation and vigilance with regard to this virus.

Three agencies are regularly in the City conducting compliance inspections on businesses that fall under their purview, including the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission, Division of Professional Licensure, and the Department of Labor Standards. Beginning this weekend, COVID-19 Community Care Coordinators from the City’s Department of Public Health will be engaging the community to educate and ensure compliance of COVID-19 guidelines in neighborhoods, parks and playgrounds, places of worship, non-profit organizations, and businesses. All City and State representatives have city or state-sanctioned identification. Residents should not hesitate to call 781-598-4000 to verify with the Department of Public Health, or call the Lynn Police at 781-595-2000 regarding any suspicious activity.”

From Mayor McGee’s office: The Lynn Public Health Department has confirmed that as of today, the number of active, confirmed positive COVID-19 cases is 293 with 14 new cases today. 4,759 Lynn residents have recovered and 119 have died. The total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Lynn since March 21, 2020, including those who have died and recovered, is 5,171. Please visit the City of Lynn COVID-19 Data Dashboard which is updated daily.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MA-DPH) is conducting a survey to hear from communities so that it can better help people through the COVID-19 crisis. By taking the survey, you can help find new solutions to community problems, and give MA-DPH the information they need to take action and support the communities that need it most. Anyone who is 14 years old or older can participate in the survey here: www.mass.gov/COVIDsurvey
Please visit http://www.ci.lynn.ma.us/covid19/resources.shtml#p7GPc1_2 for more information on how you can get a free COVID-19 test in the City of Lynn until October 31st.
We will continue to provide regular updates on COVID-19 through the City website (www.lynnma.gov), social media, and the Smart 911 emergency notification system (sign up at www.smart911.com).
