Lynn, MA – Lynn Community Television (LCTV), Lynn’s community media center, is proud to announce that they have won four awards from the Alliance for Community Media – Northeast Region’s Nor’easter Video Festival. These wins bring the station to 9 total awards in 2019.

The Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region (ACM-NE) is a regional organization representing community media centers in the Northeast. The Nor’easter Awards, now in its 21st year, are handed out every year in the fall at their annual Conference & Trade Show. All entries are judged by volunteers from other community media centers throughout the northeast.

LCTV took home 3rd place in the Arts & Theater category for their production of “The Boston Abolitionists” in September of 2018. This was a dramatic reading done as part of “LynnDouglass200”, a yearlong celebration of the famous abolitionist and former Lynn resident Frederick Douglass, in the studio at LCTV. The Poets’ Theatre of Cambridge put on this performance, which “gives voice to the wide range of anti-slavery attitudes in Massachusetts during the decades leading up to the Civil War”.

“We were glad that our audiences responded so warmly to the powerful language of the Abolitionists, whose super-charged words often rise to the level of high art–in this case, what we call “the poetry of polemics.”, said Literary Director of the Poets Theatre David Gullette. “This award inspires us to find ways to dramatize even more of the key moments of American history, and to make the Spoken Word Poetry of our ancestors ring again in the ears of today’s citizens.”

“Lynn Uncovered: Brian Pistols” won first place in the “Documentary” category. Lynn Uncovered is a web series from LCTV’s Koeun Neak where he aims to tell the stories of the artists, restaurants, organizations and ordinary people of this city. This episode featured Pistols, who shares his story about his experiences break dancing and growing up in Lynn.

In the “Event Coverage – Single Camera” category LCTV took home first place for their coverage of the 2018 Beyond Walls Mural Festival. This mini-documentary on the event featured interviews with several of the muralists. The video showcases the artists at work at a few of the dozens of murals sprinkled throughout the Downtown Lynn Cultural District, as well as the block party that ended the week-long festival.

“Lynn Community TV is a fantastic resource for the City”, said Beyond Walls CEO and Founder Al Wilson, also featured in the video. “They are consummate professionals and I’m so happy that they are again being recognized for their incredible work”

Lastly, in the “Sports Programming” category the “Training for the Olympic boxing team” video took home first place. This featured interviews with local boxers Charles Espinal and Daniel Marte, as well as their trainers, and gives us insight into the process of training for the Olympic team and opportunity to see these boxers in action.

“I just want to say thank you to Lynn Community TV for believing in us and what our program stands for.”, said owner and trainer of Private Jewels Boxing Club Alex Sepulveda, also featured in the video. I’m a Lynn native and the support I receive from Lynn TV has been above and beyond and for them to make this great video has helped my non-profit and the kids involved grow.”

With these wins, Lynn Community Television now has three national awards, four regional awards, and three state-wide awards. These awards were given by both the national & northeast region of the Alliance For Community Media and MassAccess, a member-based advocacy group for community media centers in Massachusetts. LCTV is a long-time member of both the ACM and MassAccess, and is proud to support their efforts.

Lynn Community TV and all other winners of these regional awards will be presented with their plaques at the 2019 Nor’easter Awards Ceremony, being held this year in Portland, Maine on October 31.
