Reading The Names of Lynn’s AIDS Memorial Quilt

We will be reading names from the National AIDS Memorial Quilt on Saturday 9/28 at 1pm at the Lynn Museum & Arts Center. We do this to remember those from Lynn who we’ve lost to AIDS.
Thirty years ago next month, at the height of the AIDS crisis, Claire Brewer and Mary Ellen Cocks created a panel of taupe fabric depicting a silhouette of a church, a candle, a shoe and the words “St. Pius Catholic Community, Lynn, MA remembers all our loved ones.” They sent the panel to the Names Project in Washington DC where it became part of The AIDS Memorial Quilt which is a living memorial to the lives lost to AIDS. It is considered the largest community art project in history. The quilt is made up of nearly 50,000 panels that are each 3 feet by 6 feet, roughly the size of a grave.
The St. Pius panel, returned to the city at the request of United Lynn Pride, is on display at the Lynn Museum through September 28th as part of the exhibit, “Through A Rainbow Lens, A Reflection on Lynn’s LGBTQ+ History.” At that time, thirty years ago, many churches refused to perform services for AIDS victims. “Our local funeral director and our parish community are welcoming to all people and as a result the AIDS Action Committee (in Boston) often referred people to us.”, says a letter sent along with the quilt.
