From Nueva Primavera: Residents demand city government and court system take stronger action to protect immigrants

On Saturday, March 21st at 2:00 PM, a massive, diverse crowd of residents will gather at the Lynn Commons for a united day of action against ICE, mass deportations, and the federal assault on immigrant communities. The action has been endorsed by numerous local organizations and labor unions, along with over 100 community leaders in Lynn who have united in demanding measures that protect all residents from the ongoing attacks on immigrants.

The frequent and often violent arrests by ICE and other federal authorities have created a climate of fear and intimidation for many immigrants in Lynn; now many families and individuals are fearful when shopping for groceries, walking their children to school, appearing in court, driving to work, or engaging in other everyday activities that leave them vulnerable to possible arrest. Now, this action brings together Lynn residents from diverse backgrounds to demand that municipal elected officials, the local police, and court officials implement policies necessary to fully protect immigrants regardless of status.

Community Demands:

  1. ICE Out of the Police Station: the Lynn Police Department must find a solution to the issue of “Peaceful Transfers.”
  2. ICE Out of the Court: the Lynn District Court must end all voluntary collaboration with federal immigration authorities, including an end to providing any non-public information concerning court affairs and a stop to the use of court property for ICE operations. The court must also allow greatly expanded access to virtual court for vulnerable residents.
  3.  Legal Support for Immigrants: Lynn must devote a portion of the city budget to providing legal assistance to immigrant residents affected by ICE or other agencies enacting the federal mass deportation agenda.

About Nueva Primavera:

Nueva Primavera is a committee of organizers, community leaders, and directly impacted people in Lynn that formed in response to the frequent kidnapping of Lynn residents by federal immigration authorities. It is composed of mainly immigrant workers and longtime city residents from a variety of backgrounds.

“In Lynn, we are a diverse community of hardworking people who have been severely impacted by immigration policies. Family separation is causing emotional chaos in the lives of children, youth, and seniors. Our immigrant community has contributed to the economy and growth of this city in every functional aspect of its development and progress. We deserve to live with dignity, without fear, and in freedom” – El Comite de la Nueva Primavera
