Recently a box of VHS tapes were discovered at the Grand Army of The Republic Museum & Hall. These tapes had Civil War Roundtable discussions and more…and we are happy to share them with the Lynn community! Special thanks to new Director of the G.A.R. Wendy Joseph for providing these mini time capsules. Located in Downtown Lynn, the G.A.R. Museum is “the only functioning G.A.R. Post/Civil War museum left in the country” & is one of several locations in Lynn listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the tapes had a program from 1998 entitled “Before The Lynnway”. Broad Street was once called Sea Street and the Lynnway didn’t always exist. The Lynn Museum & Historical Society produced this program, in collaboration with one of Lynn’s former community media centers. Bill Conway narrated this show while presenting pictures, facts, and stories focused on the area now known as The Lynnway. You can watch this program below.

Below are recordings of various Civil War Round-table discussions that were held at the GAR in the 90s. The last video highlights the efforts in the 1980s to renovate the GAR Museum, efforts revisited relatively recently as well.

From the GAR website: The Grand Army of the Republic Hall and Museum in Lynn is one of the last extant buildings in the United States still used for its original purpose-to Honor the Men who Fought to Save the Union during the Civil War. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for its “Significance in Military, Architectural and Social History”.

If you have never visited the GAR there will be an open house on Saturday, Sept. 25th from 9am-5pm. The public is invited to visit the Museum, see the many improvements, and experience one of Lynn’s best kept secrets.

Please note that the videos above were taken from tapes well over 20 years old, some over 30 years old. The quality of the video has deteriorated over time, but they are still in a watchable condition.
