City prohibits bus, large van parking on streets
The Lynn Traffic Commission approved an ordinance prohibiting parking buses and large vans on city streets.
The ordinance reads: “No person shall stand or park a motor bus and/or van, regardless of the type of license plate attached thereto, on a public way in the City of Lynn except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or while obeying the directions of a police officer or a traffic-control device.”
The ordinance defines a bus or van as “any motor vehicle having motor power designed and used for carrying more than nine passengers.”
Violating the ordinance will result in a $50 fine per day for each violation. There will be warnings issued for approximately one month, after which the fines will be in effect.
The ordinance was put forth by Ward 1 Councilor Dr. Peter Meaney, who along with fellow councilors heard from residents that school bus drivers are increasingly taking home buses in between their morning and afternoon runs, causing traffic and accessibility issues on city streets.
Parking of buses and commercial vans on city streets is prohibited between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but there was nothing on the books that covered the rest of the day.
Parking Director Jessica Chiappini said the parking department has been notified of buses blocking driveways and making streets difficult to navigate, but did not have the ability to take action prior to this ordinance.
“This gives us enforcement authority that we did not have. Councilors were getting complaints and passing them on to us and we had no recourse to address it. Now we do.”
