In 2020 and 2021, Diverse People United (DPU) organized Occupy Wyoma Square. This protest was initially created to recognize that the Fourth of July does not represent freedom for everyone. The intent was to acknowledge that the pursuit for liberation for Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities is ongoing. Initially, this protest led to occupying, or shutting down Wyoma Square for a rendition of Frederick Douglass’ speech: What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.

This year, on July 4th, 2023, Diverse People United organized Liberation for All. This was an expansion of Occupy Wyoma Square. This expansion included a community gathering, in addition to the protest and march. This event began with speakers, who discussed Black power, liberation, freedom, and independence. The speakers included: Barbara Atim Okeny (Outreach and Education Director for Diverse People United), yusef Hayes (North Shore Community College), and Antonio Gutierrez (LYSOA). Following the speeches, community members marched from Manning Field to Wyoma Square, for a rendition of Frederick Douglass’ speech. This year, the speech was recited by DPU’s Financial Coordinator Jonathan Okeny.

Diverse People United hopes to continue this event in the upcoming years. Bringing in more of the community, to participate in action and coming together for Black liberation.
