State, regional, and local officials will mark Earth Day by celebrating the successful conclusion of a Department of Energy Resources (DOER) grant program that has awarded 77 cities and towns – including nine majority Environmental Justice communities – over $5.5 million for installation of 116,139 energy- and cost-saving LED streetlights.

The Rapid LED Streetlight Conversion Program was administered by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) on behalf of DOER and benefited a diverse cross-section of Massachusetts rural, suburban, and urban communities (see list of grantees below). The program provided grant funding for 30 percent of the cost of materials and installation associated with converting conventional high-pressure sodium streetlights to light emitting diode (LED) technology capable of cutting electricity usage by 50 to 70 percent.

Participating municipalities saved time and money upfront through MAPC’s collective purchasing and will enjoy long-term energy and maintenance cost savings.

“Local Stories From the Front Line of the Pandemic” to air on LCTV next week

Click for full-resolution image

The Massachusetts League of Community Health Center has produced a half-hour video featuring 6 local Black doctors and nurse practitioners sharing their personal stories of the pandemic, getting the COVID-19 vaccine, and why they advocate that their patients vaccinate. A short description of the program from the MLCHC is below:

What do local doctors and nurse practitioners of color have to say about their experiences of the pandemic, its impact on their communities, and people’s concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine? Six health center providers take off their lab coats and tell their personal stories in Let’s Get There, a half-hour film from the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers. In it, they talk about how the virus can affect anyone, how frustrating and scary it is not to have a treatment, what’s it’s like to have COVID-19, and the historic mistrust Black and brown communities feel toward the scientific and medical establishments. A must-see for anyone not planning on or on the fence about getting vaccinated.

For materials in 10 languages to help you have good conversations about the COVID-19 vaccine with people who say they aren’t planning to get vaccinated  please click here.
