UPDATE: JULY 22, 2022 | The MBTA has now decided to hold off on closing the station, until the design phase is completed and work is set to begin. A press conference was held with city and state elected officials about this decision, which you can watch in full here.

The MBTA recently announced that they will be temporarily shutting down Lynnโ€™s commuter station at Central Square, which could last 3 or more years, and demolishing the parking garage next spring.

We understand the need for critical upgrades to the Lynn commuter rail station and want to see the safety of our residents prioritized above all. We are also excited about the prospect of a much-needed, more accessible new station at Central Square. At the same time we are frustrated that the MBTA has not yet committed to the steps necessary to provide convenient and efficient options for commuters who will be forced to make alternate plans.

This is a huge loss of such a major asset to our residents. Many residents rely on the commuter rail to get to work, go to school, make healthcare appointments, and much more.

We have also requested that when the MBTA parking garage closes permanently next spring, the T provide enough parking spaces for the 150-200 residents/commuters who currently use the garage daily. This includes employees of several businesses and nonprofits in the area, as well as downtown residents with monthly parking passes for the garage. We have identified several potential options for these spaces and have forwarded that list to the MBTA.

The Lynn State Delegation and the City will continue to work together to advocate for our residents, who should not be forced to pay higher fees and lose access to reliable transportation for an extended period of construction. We hope residents will join us at the Tโ€™s public hearing on this scheduled for August 3rd.
