The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) today announced the launch of a multiyear strategy to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into K-12 schools in ways that enhance teaching and learning. The strategy is the result of extensive work by DESE’s AI Task Force, which convened stakeholders – including educators, school leaders and technology specialists – last year to develop recommendations for how the state can help schools navigate the opportunities and challenges that AI presents.

This strategy also builds on Governor Maura Healey’s Massachusetts AI Hub, which the Healey-Driscoll Administration launched to drive cutting-edge collaboration between government, industry, startups and academia, pursue solutions to the world’s most critical challenges, and unlock economic opportunity for businesses and residents across the state. Massachusetts is focused on being a national leader in artificial intelligence innovation.

“Massachusetts has long been a global leader in both technological innovation and education,” said Governor Maura Healey. “This strategy will help equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in tomorrow’s economy and to engage thoughtfully with these powerful tools.”

“Artificial intelligence presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges for schools,” said Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll. “The strategies announced today will help provide Massachusetts educators with the tools and guidance they need to leverage AI responsibly and effectively.”

The strategy announced today focuses on three key areas, and DESE will create a suite of resources over the next several months to help schools with the following areas:

  1. Building a shared understanding of AI: Provide resources to help students, educators, and families develop a foundational understanding of AI, how it works and its potential uses and limitations.
  2. Training: Offer professional learning opportunities and implementation support to school staff about data privacy and how to effectively integrate AI into schools.
  3. Policy alignment: Review and revise policies to address AI-related issues, such as AI literacy, data privacy and responsible use.

“As AI rapidly transforms industries and everyday life, it is essential that Massachusetts schools are equipped to prepare students for the future. These recommendations provide a thoughtful and structured approach to help schools harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding educational equity and student privacy.”

Education Secretary Patrick A. Tutwiler

The Department’s AI Task Force’s recommendations were shaped by feedback from stakeholders across the Commonwealth, including educators, students and caregivers who shared their ideas through surveys and informal conversations. The Task Force is now shifting its focus to inform DESE’s implementation strategy.

“Massachusetts has taken an intentional and inclusive approach to addressing the complexity of AI in education,” said Richard Culatta, CEO of ISTE+ASCD. “The strategies DESE is initiating will support educators in using AI to provide Transformational Learning Experiences while creating environments for safe, responsible, and ethical use.”
