From the MBTA: Service changes are taking place in May to supportย signal work, GLTPS installation, essential infrastructure revitalization, Codman Yard improvements, and more.
The MBTA today announced service changes in May on the Red, Green, Blue, Mattapan, New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, Kingston, and Framingham/Worcester lines.
Riders can find more information on service changes through in-station signage, in-station public announcements, and at mbta.com/PlannedWork. Transit Ambassadors and MBTA staff will be available on-site to offer information and assistance during these service changes. Riders are encouraged to subscribe to T-Alerts or to follow the MBTA on X @MBTA, @MBTA_CR, and @MBTA_CR_Alerts for up-to-date service information.
On the Red Line:
As previously announced, in May, the MBTA will perform final testing and commissioning work on the Red Lineโs new digital signal system, which will strengthen Red Line service reliability for riders. Pre-testing for the new signal system was completed weeks ahead of schedule earlier this month, and this upcoming work is one of the final steps to bringing the new system online. Tamping work will also take place on the Ashmont branch next month.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspensions will take place:
- Red Line service will be suspended betweenย Broadway andย Quincy Centerย on the Braintree branchย for three consecutive days,ย May 2 โ 4.ย
- Free and accessible shuttle buses willย operateย between Broadway and Quincy Center.ย
- Regular Ashmont branch service willย operateย between JFK/UMass and Ashmont, butย ridersย will need to take shuttle bus service betweenย Broadway and JFK/UMass.ย
- Fare gates will be open at Broadway, JFK/UMass, and North Quincy.
- Accessible van service will be available between Broadway and Quincy Center on Monday, May 4. Riders should see station personnel forย assistance.ย
- Riders are encouraged to considerย Commuter Railย service between South Station and Braintree, which will be free during this service change.ย Regular fares should beย purchasedย for travel beyond Braintree.ย ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Parkย Streetย fromย Braintreeย should budget at least anย additionalย 40ย โย 50ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
- Red Line service will be suspended betweenย Broadway and Ashmontย on the Ashmont branchย beginning at approximatelyย 6ย PMย on Thursday,ย May 14, and continuing for the nextย fourย consecutive days,ย Mayย 15ย โย 18.ย
- Free and accessible shuttle buses willย operateย between Broadway andย Ashmont.ย
- Regularย Braintreeย branch service willย operateย between JFK/UMass andย Braintree, butย ridersย will need to take shuttle bus service between Broadway and JFK/UMass.ย
- Fare gates will be open at Broadway and JFK/UMass.ย
- Riders should note that Mattapan Line service will also be suspended beginning at 6 PM on May 14 and on May 15 โ 16.ย Additionalย details are below.ย ย
- Accessible van service will be available between Broadway and Ashmont. Riders should see station personnel forย assistance.ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Parkย Streetย fromย Ashmontย should budget at least anย additionalย 30ย โย 40ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
- Red Line service will be suspended betweenย Broadway and Quincy Centerย on the Braintree branch andย Broadway and Ashmontย on the Ashmont branch for three consecutive days,ย May 29 โ 31.ย
- Freeย and accessible shuttle buses willย operateย between Broadway and Quincy Center and between Broadway and Ashmont.ย
- Fare gates will be open at Broadway and Quincy Center.ย
- Riders are encouraged to considerย Commuter Railย service between South Station and Braintree,ย which will be free during this service change. Regular fares should be purchased for travel beyond Braintree.ย
- Accessible van service will be available between Broadwayย and Ashmontย as well as Broadway and Quincyย Center.ย Riders should see station personnel forย assistance.ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Parkย Streetย fromย Braintreeย should budget at least anย additionalย 40ย โย 50ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
On the Green Line:
The MBTA will continue the installation of critical Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) infrastructure on the C and E branches in May. When complete, GLTPS will combine vehicle and wayside equipment to avoid train-on-train collisions, incorporate speed enforcement, and more.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspensions will take place:
- Green Line service will be suspended betweenย Kenmore andย Cleveland Circleย forย twelveย consecutive days,ย May 6 โ 17.ย ย
- Free and accessible shuttle buses will replace service between Kenmore andย Cleveland Circle.ย
- Shuttle bus service will not be available at Saint Maryโs Street, Kent Street, or Brandon Hall in both directions. Riders should insteadย utilizeย shuttle bus service at the next nearest stop.ย
- Additionalย service will be added to the Green Line D branch during this time period.ย Riders who board or disembark at Cleveland Circle are encouraged toย insteadย utilizeย D branch service at Reservoir, which is 0.1 miles away (or about a two- to three-minute walk).
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Government Centerย fromย Cleveland Circleย should budget at least anย additionalย 15ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
- Green Line service will be suspended betweenย Government Centerย andย Heath Streetย on theย Eย branchย for seven consecutive days,ย May 30 โ June 5.ย
- Riders can insteadย utilizedย parallel Route 39 bus service, which will be enhanced withย additionalย service.ย
- Riders usingย theย Routeย 39ย should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Government Centerย fromย Heathย Streetย should budget at least anย additionalย 10ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
On the Blue Line:
During one weekend in May, the MBTA will continue essential infrastructure upgrades, track renewal, and other critical revitalization work on the Blue Line. This regular, planned renewal and revitalization work is ongoing and continuous, ensuring the long-term stability of our infrastructure and preserving the system for future generations of riders.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspensions will take place:
- Blue Line service will be suspended betweenย Bowdoin and Airportย during the weekend ofย May 9 โ 10.ย
- Free and accessible shuttle buses willย make stops at Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket for Orange and Green Line connections in the downtown area.ย ย ย
- Shuttle buses will not stop at Aquarium, State, Government Center, or Bowdoin.ย ย
- Fare gates will be open at all Blue Line stations between Airport and Wonderland.ย
- Riders may also use theย East Boston Ferry, which will be free during this service change with tripsย departingย everyย 30 minutes from 6 AM toย 9ย AM,ย everyย 15 minutesย from 9 AM to 9 PM, and a trip at 9:30 PM.ย A schedule will be posted soon atย MBTA.com/EastBostonFerry.ย
- Accessible van service will be available within the downtown area. Riders should see station personnel forย assistance.ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Government Centerย fromย Wonderlandย should budget at least anย additionalย 30ย โย 40ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
On the Mattapan Line:
In May, there will be a weekend Mattapan service change to perform critical power work within the MBTAโs Codman Yard facility.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspensions will take place:
- Mattapan Line service will be suspended betweenย Ashmont and Mattapanย beginning at approximatelyย 6ย PM on Thursday,ย May 14, and for the next two consecutive days,ย May 15ย โ 16.ย ย
- Free and accessible shuttle buses will replace service between Ashmont and Mattapan.ย
- Riders are also encouraged toย utilizeย Fairmount Commuter Rail Line serviceย atย Blue Hill Avenue Station.ย ย
- Riders should note that Red Line Ashmont branch service will also be suspended beginning at 6 PM on May 14 and on May 15 โ 18.ย Additionalย details are above.ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Ashmontย fromย Mattapanย should budget at least anย additionalย 15ย minutes of travel inย additionalย to their regular commute.ย
On the New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, and Kingston Commuter Rail Lines:
The MBTA will perform critical maintenance work on the Old Colony Lines during a weekend in May. This regular, planned renewal and revitalization work is ongoing and continuous, ensuring the long-term stability of our infrastructure and preserving the system for future generations of riders.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspension will take place:
- New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, and Kingston Line service will be suspended betweenย South Station and Braintree (including at Quincy Center)ย during the weekend ofย May 9 โ 10.ย ย
- Passengers should insteadย utilizeย Red Line subway service between South Station and Braintree (via Quincy Center) for Commuter Rail connections beyond Braintree or Quincy Center.ย
- Riders traveling to/from South Station should budget extra travel time. For example, a rider traveling to South Station from Braintree should budget at least 15 minutes of travel in addition to their regular trip time.ย
- A dedicated diversion schedule will be available onย MBTA.com/CR.ย
On the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line:
The MBTA will perform critical infrastructure work on the Framingham/Worcester Line during one weekend in May.
To accomplish this work, the following service suspension will take place:
- Framingham/Worcester Line service will be suspended betweenย Worcester and Graftonย during the weekend ofย May 16 โ 17.ย
- ree and accessible shuttle buses will replace service between Worcester and Grafton.ย ย
- Riders using shuttles bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling toย Graftonย fromย Worcesterย should budgetย up to 20 minutes using the shuttle bus.ย ย
- A dedicated diversion schedule will be available onย MBTA.com/CR.ย
