From Community Transportation Coordinator Nick Alonzo: The Community Transportation Coordinator program is a new program, and role, sprouted from the Lynn Public Health Department’s continued research into social determinants of health — assessing some of the root causes for health inequity in Lynn
A pattern was noticed across reports and assessments, such as the 2024 Lynn Community Health Assessment and the 2024 Lynn Food Action Plan. This pattern was that transportation was a consistent barrier for many trying to access resources such as affordable, healthy food or important medical appointments. Consistent, reliable, safe, and affordable transportation is taken for granted by many. But, for many others, it is a rare luxury to be able to transport themselves to where they need to and want to go. Therefore, the Public Health Department is dedicating resources to understanding and improving transportation for Lynn’s low-income, disabled, and senior populations.
This survey asks questions about what methods folks use to get around within and beyond Lynn, what barriers they face in getting to places they need or want to go, and their personal experiences (complaints, ideas, concerns, etc.). This survey is helpful for Community Transportation Coordinator Nick Alonzo to get a sense of what transportation options people are using, what the key issues are with these transportation options in people’s lives, what better transportation could help people do, and what better transportation should potentially look like.
These are all essential for long-term transportation planning; direct community input helps guide decision-making and where resources are put towards. This survey is just one prong of the Community Transportation program’s outreach, as he often tables at different housing complexes and community centers throughout Lynn, ride the buses to talk to folks, and attend different events with different organizations to reach different communities.
Additional Transportation Resources
In addition to public outreach, Nick helps consult folks looking to find transportation options for specific scenarios, assist with signing folks up for transportation programs (MBTA reduced fares, the RIDE, the RIDE FLEX, MassHealth PT-1 program).
