City of Lynn Establishing Tree Committee, Seeking Community Feedback
The community is invited to help establish a Lynn Tree Committee to support and advance urban forest management in the City of Lynn.
A tree committee or tree and forest board is a citizen-led group that works with local public officials to improve the health of the urban and community forest through advocacy, education, management, plantings, and maintenance activities. Some of what a tree committee can do includes education campaigns, apply for grants, address safety concerns, and organize fundraisers.
Mass DCR points to Amherst’s Public Shade Tree Committee as an example of an effective committee. They work to preserve, protect, and promote Amherst’s public shade trees and its urban forestry goals. Since 1978 the Committee has played a key role in the Town’s successful application to state and national grants, run regular tree planting programs, and participates in the review of projects that impact the Town’s urban forest. They work with the DPW, Conservation Commission, Planning Department and frequently support surrounding communities with their public shade tree programs.
The City of Lynn’s Planning Department also points to some examples of Tree Committees in nearby communities: Boston Urban Forestry Advisory Committee, Brookline Tree Planting Committee, Lynnfield Tree Committee(External link), & Swampscott Tree Committee.
