The City of Lynn has signed a 10-year waste disposal contract with Reworld, formerly Covanta, a leader in sustainable waste solutions. Under the contract, effective September 1, 2024, Reworld will manage the waste picked up by Capitol Waste Services, with whom the City began contracting July 1.

The waste collected by Capitol Waste Services will be delivered to the Reworld before being shipped to Reworld’s thermomechanical treatment facility (TTF) in Haverhill, which provides Massachusetts communities with reliable and environmentally conscious waste disposal. The facility annually processes more than 600,000 tons of waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. Through the use of waste-to-energy technology, the TTF converts trash into 45 megawatts of renewable energy that is used to power 32,000 homes annually. It also recovers 16,500 tons of metal for recycling yearly.

This contract benefits the City financially over 10 years through the provision of free lawn and leaf waste removal as well as locking in favorable rates in a volatile industry with fixed caps on any annual increases.

“We are excited to partner with Reworld for this 10-year contract,” said Mayor Jared Nicholson. “Their location in Lynn means that trash trucks will be able to make quicker trips to and from the facility which equates to a reduction in traffic and improved service to our residents. The length of this contract also provides sustained budget certainty for the City during a time where we are seeing waste maintenance costs increase significantly nationally.”

“We are proud to partner with the City of Lynn to provide sustainable waste solutions that align with both community needs and environmental responsibility,” said Richard O’Connor, Market Area Director at Reworld.
