Building Community Roots

At the heart of the Galleries At LynnArts’ latest community art project stands a powerful symbol: the Banyan Tree. But what makes this tree so special? Across cultures and generations, the Banyan Tree has carried deep meaning—and it’s the perfect inspiration for a collaborative creation rooted in connection, care, and growth.
In many parts of the world—especially India and Southeast Asia—the Banyan Tree is more than just a tree.
-
In Hinduism, it represents immortality, spiritual wisdom, and divine shelter, often linked to gods like Vishnu and Shiva.
-
In Buddhism, it’s connected to the Bodhi Tree, under which the Buddha found enlightenment. It stands for resilience and inner peace.
-
In local villages, it’s a natural meeting place—serving as a center for community and storytelling.
The Banyan Tree is unique in how it grows: from a single seed, it sends down aerial roots that become trunks, creating a network of support.
This makes it a powerful metaphor for:
-
Interconnection – each root and branch supports the whole
-
Community strength – many parts forming a unified structure
-
Legacy – standing tall through generations, holding memory and history
Why the Banyan Tree for Our Project?
Our paper Banyan Tree is built just like its real-life counterpart—from many individual contributions. Each piece you add is a root, a leaf, a branch in our growing collective story.
It symbolizes:
-
Healing and hope
-
Cultural diversity
-
Shared creativity
Together, we’re building more than a tree. We’re growing a living work of art that reflects who we are—stronger together.
