Recently a new non-profit opened in Lynn: Small Dog Boatworks. SMB builds and restores boats as well as teach design, fabrication, finishing, teamwork and a whole lot more to youth from as early as 5th grade to seniors in high school. Ted Dillard from SMB recently put out a call for donations. From Ted:
As you probably know, I’ve left the Brickyard. I’ve started Small Dog Boatworks, and I’ve been able to secure a grant to help with our first year. I have a building that we’re waiting to move into as soon as the owner completes construction, but we can do on-site builds this spring. That will house Small Dog but also we’re looking at having a VERY limited shop co-op (NOT a makerspace) with the equipment we’re getting. That’s the first part.
The second part is that the building is on the site of the Britt Brothers shipbuildling from around 1903 to 1938 or so. legendary builders, favorites of the Herreshoff and Alden designers. There’s a huge heritage there, and we’re looking at various ideas along the lines of a small museum dedicated to the Britt Bros. in that building.
The third part is we just were contacted by a school for autistic kids to teach these guys how to build a boat. I’m without words.
We still need help with funding – please click the link below for all the details.
Recently Small Dog Boatworks was featured in Wooden Boat magazine.
