A Volunteer Advocacy Internship for Young Women
The Ginsburg Initiative represents a select group of young women in Essex County who are advocates and activists. Named for the inspirational Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an advocate fighting for women’s rights throughout her life, the initiative aims to raise the voices of young women in the fight for gender equity and justice.
Under the mentorship of the Essex County Commissioners, members of the Ginsburg Initiative will meet regularly to collaborate on identifying and discussing issues they believe are pertinent in the community. The initiative will be comprised of young women aged 14-22 from Essex County and diverse backgrounds. The Ginsburg Initiative will help guide the Essex County Commissioners in ensuring that the voices of our young constituents are heard.
Members will be responsible for:
- Attend monthly meetings via Zoom to engage in meaningful dialogue
- Engage with outreach with schools and organizations in Essex County to create a network of empowered young women.
- Identify opportunities for young women in the county to participate in and create a running database (scholarships, summer enrichment, etc.)
- Guide Essex Commissioners in their efforts to ensure young constituents are being represented by legislation
- Attend monthly Commission Meetings to report on initiative progress on a rotating basis
- Plan and facilitate one long-term project that addresses an issue pertinent to the county that initiative members select together
- Maintain natural dialogue between monthly meetings to keep the momentum
Members will serve at least one term (September to June), with the opportunity to continue on. Members can receive volunteer hours. The Essex County Commission on the Status of Women is excited to welcome a cohort of the next social justice warrior!
