The $1.7 million turf replacement project at Fraser Field is in the final stages, with the first games on the new surface scheduled for later this week.
In addition to replacing the synthetic turf in the infield, the natural grass outfield has also been replaced with new synthetic turf, resulting in an entirely new playing surface, including the bullpens down each foul line, basepaths, pitching mound and batter’s boxes.
A new fence has been erected around the perimeter of the field and an all-new drainage system installed underground. The drainage system includes a network of pipes and highly permeable sand and gravel, according to DPW Commissioner Andrew Hall. The contractor is David W. White and Son, which started the project last September.
“We are proud to provide these first-class athletic facilities for our athletes and the other schools we host,” said Mayor Jared C. Nicholson. “Having Fraser and Manning fields in the same complex sets Lynn apart.”
Fraser Field and Manning Field make up the Harry Agganis Athletic Complex.
The artificial turf infield at Fraser was installed in 2003 when the North Shore Spirit professional team began playing at Fraser and it was replaced in 2013.
Hall said the City can expect to get 10-12 years of use out of the new turf at Fraser Field.
“It looks great and it will be an excellent surface to play on,” Hall said. “Having an all-turf field with this drainage system will allow games to be played that would have been postponed in the past due to wet field conditions. It is a significant upgrade.”
