City Launches Vision Lynn: A Comprehensive Plan | September 16, 2021

The City of Lynn, led by the Planning Department, is launching its first ever comprehensive planning process, Vision Lynn. This has been a priority for Mayor McGee and his administration since taking office, and will focus on robust community engagement to create a document that captures the vision, values, and goals of our community and outlines the development and infrastructure we will need to achieve them. 

Over the next year and a half, the Planning Department will host a number of opportunities for residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to share their vision for the future of Lynn. These opportunities will prioritize engagement in a variety of formats, locations, and languages with the goal of reaching Lynners of many different backgrounds. There are two opportunities for interested community members to get involved now.

First, everyone is invited to participate in the initial Vision Lynn survey. The survey is available in eight languages and can be taken through text message by texting HELLO to 781-417-3778 or online. (See below or the project website for how to take the survey through text in other languages.) This quick,  open-ended survey will ensure the planning process addresses the ideas and concerns participants raise in their input. Respondents will also have the opportunity to opt into text or email updates regarding Vision Lynn. 

Second, all are welcome to apply for the Vision Lynn Steering Committee. The role of the Steering Committee will be to ensure that the community engagement process for Vision Lynn incorporates as many different voices from Lynn as possible. Made up of members of the City Council, government agencies, and individual community members, this group is expected to meet once a month in the evenings throughout 2022. Ideal Steering Committee members will be involved in the Lynn community and willing to think critically and collaboratively to ensure that we maximize participation and representation across a diverse constituency. Interested applicants should fill out an application form by Sunday, October 17^th to be considered.

“Vision Lynn is an important opportunity for the community to set a course for the future of our City,” says Mayor Thomas McGee. “I hope our residents and organizational partners will consider how they can participate, whether it’s as a committed member of our Steering Committee or as a casual survey respondent. Everyone’s perspective is important and critical to this plan’s success.”

Comprehensive plans help municipalities coordinate amongst different departments and organizations, and communicate a clear, long-term vision for the community’s desires. Vision Lynn will play an important role in policymaking for City staff and elected officials for the next twenty years. Updates about Vision Lynn will be posted to the project page on Lynn in Common, the Planning Department’s community engagement web portal.

“The best comprehensive plans are written shoulder-to-shoulder with our community members,” says Principal Planning Director Aaron Clausen. “We are actively looking for opportunities to collaborate with local organizations to maximize our reach and create a document that supports Lynn as a whole.”
